Is Wallpaper Making a Comeback?

Is Wallpaper Making a Comeback?

One trend people are continually asking about is wallpaper. Of course, for the last 20 or so years, that question has been, “Is wallpaper coming back?” It’s not a nonsensical question to ask. After all, the answer has been pretty fleeting. In new construction, the answer seems to be a “no.” Yet, if you visit an ordinary home in the burbs, it’s likely you’ll find at least a small section of wall adorned with some semblance of wallpaper.

Wallpaper is often utilized as an accent wall or to cover a tiny powder room, when you see it these days. Yet, in the not-so-distant past, you could visit homes in any part of the country, in any zip code, in the city or the countryside and find entire rooms adorned with floral or patterned wallpaper. So, which is it? Is wallpaper a thing in 2024? Should I wallpaper the space behind my bed with art-deco bats in flight?

Well, to answer this question, I did the only thing I knew to do when pressed for solutions to my problems. I, of course, speak of the all-powerful information wizard, known across the land as, “The Google.” At the top of the search results, is an article for Homes and Gardens, published a little over three months ago, citing the “Twelve Wallpaper Trends to Have on Your Radar in 2024.” It’s a very informative piece for any homeowner thinking about doing any degree of wallpapering in their home, including an in depth look at the various available types and textures as well as suggestions regarding which rooms in your home are best complemented by which style.

The article also discusses the virtues of murals, something undeniably wallpaper-adjacent. After all, with both mediums you’re creating images, patterns and contrast you wouldn’t normally achieve with a coat of paint over drywall. According to this article, the prevalence of murals has surged by 18% in listed homes in 2024. Conversely, a survey conducted by Fixr in 2023 resulted in 96% of interior designers signaling some awareness of or approval of the wallpaper renaissance. They also point out an often-unreported reason for why wallpapers and murals have been enjoying a comeback as of late. The increase in digitally printed and peel and stick options available from online craft and artisan-based marketplaces like Etsy, Pinterest, etc. Many of these sellers cater to niche sectors of the market who are looking for something scarce or unique to give their homes an added flair.

Reminding you that the “is wallpaper back” question is as immortal as the Twinkie or Turritopsis dohrnii, I came across this article from 2021, which also attempts to answer it. British interior designer Kathryn M. Ireland is quoted in the piece, saying “Let the paper hold center stage.” Perhaps the most profound statement regarding this eternal debate. If you’re going to use wallpaper, let it be the centerpiece it is. Don’t bury it.

In the end, does it really matter what’s trending? If you plan on selling tomorrow, for sure. When you’re selling, it’s most important to cater to the wants of the marketplace to ensure more eyes on your home. f you’re in your forever home, however, you might as well let your personality shine. Sometimes, wallpaper can be a part of that. Again, we ask, “is wallpaper back?” Depends on who you ask!
